The second round of the 2023 World Cup starts with the current runner-up New Zealand taking on the Dutch in Hyderabad. New Zealand looked to build on their comprehensive victory against England in the opening match. They were up against a buoyant Dutch side motivated by an all-round Bas de Leede performance against Pakistan. Although New Zealand is much stronger on paper, the Netherlands can surprise them with a spirited team performance.

New Zealand made a solitary change to their team that demolished England in the first match. Fast bowler Lockie Ferguson replaces all-rounder James Neesham. Captaincy & Tactics
Netherlands introduced spin from the first over of the New Zealand innings and it was working fine for the Dutch. Aryan Dutt bowled two maiden overs as the Kiwi batsmen failed to make their mark on the game early on. But the openers soon found their mojo back to smash New Zealand past fifty within 5 overs. Dutch captain Scott Edwards rotated his spinners well to pose a challenge before the Kiwi batters.
Tom Latham has been immaculate in terms of decision-making. The stand-in skipper enhanced his reputation yet again by taking successful initiatives throughout the match. He turned to his pacers in the later part of the innings to clean up the tail.
Batting Analysis
Will Young miss out on the chance to get some runs in the first match? The 30-year-old batter got his first half-century at the World Cup with a dazzling display of stroke-making. Young was playing with a straight bat, he accumulated 20 runs from that shot. After three successive maiden overs at the start, the opening duo of Young and Conway started hitting boundaries for fun.
Rachin Ravindra continues his bright start with another impressive knock. The all-rounder scored an innings of 51 from 51 balls with 3 fours and a six. Daryl Mitchell also impressed with the bat as Kane Williamson sits out another game through injury.
Despite the early struggles, Tom Latham finished strongly to record a fifty, he ended up scoring 53 at a strike rate of 115.22. But the main highlight of the later part of the Kiwi innings is the explosive batting of Mitchell Santner. He likes to bat in Indian conditions, he has scored 229 runs, averaging 28.62, scoring 101.32 runs per 100 balls.
Colin Ackermann was the shining light in the Dutch innings. The South African-born batter played a proactive innings with 35 singles and 4 doubles. Ackerman put on a stand of 50 from 54 with Nidamanuru to keep the Dutch hopes alive.
Ackerman showed deft touches especially along the square of the wicket, scoring 28 runs in that region. Skipper Scorr Edwards and debutant Sybrand Engelbrecht provided the Hyderabad crowd with some late entertainment but it was never going to be enough in pursuit of a massive target.
Bowling Analysis
Mitchell Santner does not possess the required repertoire of an elite spinner. But the one thing he has perfected over the years is his variation of pace. He deployed that skill to maximum effect by picking up five wickets. All 5 of his wicket-taking balls pitched on a good length and made it challenging for the batters to negotiate the pace.
Matt Henry also used the pace and bounce of the pitch with some delectable stock balls. The seam bowler enjoys bowling at World Cups – he has claimed 22 wickets from just 13 games, striking in every 31 balls.
Aryan Dutt, Roelof van der Merwe, and Paul van Meerkeeren all took 3 wickets apiece in the first innings. Dutt achieved the rare feat of bowling back-to-back maiden overs at the beginning of an innings.
Van der Merwe rolled back the years with some beautiful flighted deliveries. The soon-to-be-turned left-arm orthodox baller was erratic with 13% of his deliveries pitched on the shorter side. The trademark wild celebrations indicated his undying passion for the beautiful game.
Van Meerkeren was very good at attacking the stumps. He conceded 59 runs to take the wickets of Will Young and Daryl Mitchell. Van Meerkeren used the wobbling seam to spectacularly bowl the dangerous Mitchell out. Bas de Leede went for plenty in this game, the claimed the solitary wicket of Glenn Phillips.
Fielding Analysis
The highlight of the day in the field was the running catch of Roelof van der Merwe to dismiss Mark Chapman. The veteran spinner covered a lot of ground to his left and completed an impressive catch. Daryl Mitchell was dropped early on in the cover region by Ackermann.
New Zealand missed two catches and Mitchell Santner made a mess of an attempted run out. Glenn Phillps was once again exceptional in the field with some top-notch dives.
Key Performances
The game belonged to Mitchell Santer with his all-round performance with the bat and then the ball. Earlier Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, and Tom Latham all scored fifties to give New Zealand a hefty total. Roelof Van der Merwe, Paul van Meekeren, and Aryan Dutt equally shared six wickets among them.
Colin Ackerman played a blinder of an innings to give impetus to the Dutch. Mitchell Santner became the first player in New Zealand history to claim a five-wicket at the World Cup. He was backed up by Matt Henry who picked up three scalps.
Turning Point
Mitchell Santner came out to bat after New Zealand had lost three wickets within a space of 24 balls that yielded only 16 runs. The Kiwis were looking to score 300+ runs but needed to score quickly under pressure.
Mitchell Santner rose to the occasion and scored a brilliant innings of 36 runs. The southpaw smashed 3 fours and 2 sixes to help New Zealand get past 320. This innings made sure New Zealand would return to the dressing room with reinvigorated enthusiasm.

Match Wrap-Up
It was another dominant display from the Black Caps who went into the top of the points table. They posted a big total thanks to three half-centuries and a Santner cameo. The Netherlands batted well until the 25th over but then started losing wickets in regular intervals. New Zealand will face Bangladesh in Chennai next. Netherlands’s next test will take them to Dharamshala, a date against South Africa awaits.
