Cricket is a game that has captivated millions of fans across the globe with its thrilling contests, glorious moments and legendary players. Every cricket fan has their own opinion on who is the greatest player of all time or the GOAT, in cricket. 

But who is the GOAT of cricket, or the greatest of all time? This is a question that has sparked endless debates among cricket fans, experts and analysts. There are many factors that can be considered to answer this question, such as performances, consistency, impact, longevity, records, achievements, accolades, legacy and greatness. But there is no definitive answer to this question, as different players have excelled in different formats, eras, conditions and roles. 

In this short read, we will try to present my own perspective on who is the GOAT of cricket, based on various criteria and categories. We will also try to be as objective and unbiased as possible, while acknowledging that this is a subjective and debatable topic. Without further ado, let us begin our journey to find out who is the GOAT of cricket!

What is GOAT?

GOAT is an acronym for Greatest Of All Time. It is a term that is widely used in the world of sports to describe a player who has achieved excellence, unparalleled skill and an iconic status within a given domain. 

When applied to cricket, it translates to a cricketer whose skills, performance, achievements and influence stand tall among his peers and predecessors.

How to determine the GOAT?

There are many factors that can be considered to determine the GOAT of cricket. Some of the most common ones are:

• Performance: This refers to the statistical records and averages of a player across different formats, conditions, and oppositions. It also includes the consistency and longevity of a player’s career.

• Achievements: This refers to the trophies and awards that a player has won or contributed to in his career. It also includes the individual milestones and records that a player has set or broken.

• Impact: This refers to the influence and contribution that a player has had on his team’s success and on the game as a whole. It also includes the ability to perform under pressure and in crucial situations.

• Legacy: This refers to the reputation and recognition that a player has earned from his fans, peers, critics, and experts. It also includes the inspiration and admiration that a player has generated among the current and future generations of cricketers.

Who is the GOAT of cricket?

As mentioned earlier, there is no definitive answer to this question, as different players have excelled in different categories and criteria. However, based on my own perspective and analysis, we have shortlisted some of the most deserving candidates for the GOAT of cricket in different departments: batting, bowling, all-rounder, wicketkeeping.

Greatest Batsman of all time

Cricket has seen some of the most brilliant batters that have defined generations with their style and technique. In my opinion, the greatest batsman of all time is Sachin Tendulkar. Here are some of the reasons why we think so:

• Sachin Tendulkar is the most prolific run-scorer in the history of cricket. He has scored 34,357 runs across all formats, which is more than 6,000 runs ahead of the second-highest run-scorer (Ricky Ponting). 

He has also scored 100 centuries in international cricket, which is 29 more than the second-highest century-maker (Virat Kohli).

• Sachin Tendulkar has played for 24 years in international cricket, which is the longest career span for any batsman. He has also played 200 Tests and 463 ODIs, which are the most matches played by any batsman. 

He has also faced 42,989 balls in international cricket, which is more than 8,000 balls more than the second-most balls faced (Rahul Dravid).

• Sachin Tendulkar has performed consistently across different formats, conditions, and oppositions. He has scored runs in every country he has played in, against every team he has faced, and in every situation he has encountered. 

He has also adapted his game according to the changing demands of cricket over time.

• Sachin Tendulkar has won many accolades and awards in his career. He has been named as the ICC Cricketer of the Year (2010), ICC ODI Player of the Year (1998), ICC Test Player of the Year (2010), Wisden Cricketer of the Year (1997), Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World (2010), Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy (2010), Bharat Ratna (2014), among others.

• Sachin Tendulkar has had a huge impact on his team’s success and on the game as a whole. He has been part of many memorable victories for India, such as the 2011 World Cup, 2007 World T20, 2003 World Cup, 2001 Kolkata Test, 1998 Sharjah Cup, etc. 

Sachin Tendulkar was a batting maestro who mesmerized millions of fans around the world with his sublime skills, supreme consistency and splendid strokes. He was a cricket icon who carried the hopes and dreams of a nation on his shoulders for more than two decades. 

Being a cricket maestro, he achieved every possible milestone and honor in the game with grace and humility. He was the GOAT of cricket for many fans and critics.

Some of the other great batsmen that deserve a mention are Sir Don Bradman, Sir Vivian Richards, Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting, Virat Kohli, etc.

Greatest Bowler of all time

Cricket has also witnessed some of the most lethal and skillful bowlers that have terrorized and mesmerized the batsmen. In my opinion, the greatest bowler of all time is Muttiah Muralitharan. Here are some of the reasons why we think so:

• Muttiah Muralitharan is the highest wicket-taker in the history of cricket. He has taken 800 wickets in Tests and 534 wickets in ODIs, which are both world records. 

He has also taken 67 five-wicket hauls and 22 ten-wicket hauls in Tests, which are also world records.

• Muttiah Muralitharan has played for 18 years in international cricket, which is the second-longest career span for any bowler (after James Anderson). 

He has also played 133 Tests and 350 ODIs, which are among the most matches played by any bowler.

• Muttiah Muralitharan has performed consistently across different formats, conditions, and oppositions. 

He has taken wickets in every country he has played in, against every team he has faced, and in every situation he has encountered. He has also mastered various types of spin bowling, such as off-spin, doosra, top-spinner etc.

• Muttiah Muralitharan has won many accolades and awards in his career. He has been named as the ICC Cricketer of the Year (2006), ICC Test Player of the Year (2006), Wisden Cricketer of the Year (1999), Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World (2000), Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy (2006), among others.

• Muttiah Muralitharan has had a huge impact on his team’s success and on the game as a whole. He has been the main weapon for Sri Lanka in many memorable victories, such as the 1996 World Cup, 2002 Champions Trophy, 2014 World T20, etc. 

He has also challenged and entertained millions of fans and cricketers with his variations, accuracy, guile and spirit.

Some of the other great bowlers that deserve a mention are Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Wasim Akram, Anil Kumble, Dale Steyn, etc.

Greatest All-Rounder of All Time

Cricket has also produced some of the most versatile and dynamic players that have excelled in both batting and bowling. In my opinion, the greatest all-rounder of all time is Sir Garfield Sobers. Some of the reasons why he’s thought so:

• Sir Garfield Sobers is widely regarded as the most complete cricketer ever. He was a brilliant batsman who could bat anywhere in the order and play any kind of shot. 

He was also a superb bowler who could bowl left-arm fast-medium, left-arm orthodox spin, or left-arm wrist spin. He was also a brilliant fielder who could field anywhere on the ground.

• Sir Garfield Sobers has scored 8,032 runs in 93 Tests at an average of 57.78 with a top score of 365. He has also taken 235 wickets in Tests at an average of 34.03 with a best of 6/73. He has also scored 28 centuries and taken six five-wicket hauls in Tests.

• Sir Garfield Sobers has performed consistently across different conditions and oppositions. He has scored runs and taken wickets in every country he has played in and against every team he has faced. He has also captained West Indies in 39 Tests, winning nine and losing ten.

• Sir Garfield Sobers has won many accolades and awards in his career. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1975 for his services to cricket. 

He was also named as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Century in 2000. He was also inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009.

• Sir Garfield Sobers has had a huge impact on his team’s success and on the game as a whole. He was part of many memorable victories for the West Indies like the first-ever Test win over England at Lord’s in 1957, the first-ever series win over Australia in Australia in 1960-61, etc. 

He has also inspired and influenced millions of fans and cricketers with his skill, flair, charisma & sportsmanship.

Above are the names that come to mind when we think of the GOAT of cricket. But there are many other players who have also left their mark on the game with their exceptional skills and achievements. Some of them are:

1. Sir Vivian Richards: The batting legend who was known for his aggressive and stylish approach, and dominated bowlers in both Test and ODI cricket.

2. Shane Warne: The spin legend who revolutionized leg-spin bowling with his variations and guile, and took more than 1,000 wickets in international cricket.

3. Jacques Kallis: The all-rounder legend who scored more than 25,000 runs and took more than 500 wickets in international cricket, and was one of the most consistent performers in all formats.

4. Ricky Ponting: The captain legend who led Australia to two World Cup titles and many series wins, and was also one of the best batsmen of his era.

5. MS Dhoni: The wicketkeeper-batsman legend who led India to three ICC trophies and many memorable victories, and was also one of the best finishers in limited-overs cricket.

6. Virat Kohli: The modern-day legend who is breaking records with his batting prowess in all formats, and is also one of the most influential captains and icons of the game.

7. Kapil Dev: The all-rounder legend who led India to their first World Cup title in 1983, and was one of the best fast bowlers and hard-hitting batsmen of his time.

8. Wasim Akram: The swing legend who could make the ball talk with his pace and movement, and was one of the most lethal bowlers in both Test and ODI cricket.

9. Kumar Sangakkara: The wicketkeeper-batsman legend who scored more than 28,000 runs in international cricket, and was one of the most elegant and classy batsmen of his generation.
